The appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng, former chief operating officer of the SABC as chief of corporate affairs of the corporation is a chess game in the typical re-deployment style of the ANC and the FF Plus will continue full steam to call him to accountability for any losses that the corporation had suffered under his leadership.
Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus’ parliamentary spokesperson on communication, says the arrogance of the SABC and Motsoeneng is regrettable, and it, therefore welcomes the decision of the Public Protector, Adv. Thuli Madonsela, to investigate whether Motsoeneng is competent for his new position.
According to Adv. Alberts, the FF Plus has also submitted an application to the SABC in terms of the Pai Act to obtain specific information to determine how much damage Motsoeneng as acting operational officer has done to the broadcaster.
Adv. Alberts says the following information is being sought:
According to Adv. Alberts, the Paia application’s aim is to determine how many internationally acquired programs – which had been paid for in American dollars – will no longer be broadcast due to the 90% local content policy. This means that millions of dollars’ inventory will possibly have to be written off as a loss.
“The FF Plus will provide this to the Companies Commission, which has indicated that it is willing to investigate the decisions of Motsoeneng as the senior decision-maker of the SABC for possible breaches of the Companies Act, should the necessary proof be submitted.
“If it appears that Motsoeneng had acted recklessly, he can be held personally liable for damage to the SABC in terms of this Act.
“It is time that reckless decision makers in state-owned companies are held accountable for their wasting of funds in terms of the Companies Act’s new and stronger protection measures,” Adv. Alberts said.
