The FF Plus takes note of the summons issued to the Deputy Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM), Gary van Niekerk, to appear in the Gqeberha Commercial Crimes court for allegedly violating financial and cyber crime legislation.
Van Niekerk has been charged with violating the Local Government: Municipal Finance Management Act and the Cyber crimes Act.
Although the FF Plus does not want to anticipate the court ruling, any actions and possible sanctions against individuals implicated in corruption and fraud are welcomed.
Action should, however, be taken against any and all NMBM officials guilty of unlawful conduct.
Corruption and fraud have a devastating impact on basic service delivery to residents.
Corrupt practices will only be eradicated if legislation is stringently enforced, and action should be taken against offenders without fear or bias.
