Non-payment and failed negotiations paralyse refuse removal in Ekurhuleni

The current refuse removal crisis in Kempton Park once again serves as proof that the ANC/EFF coalition is simply unable to govern the Ekurhuleni Metro effectively.

Household rubbish has been piling up in residential areas for days now.

The Metro has attempted to shift the blame to “ongoing negotiations” with service providers, but the reality is that several contractors have not been paid for months and the Metro owes them millions.

In the opinion of the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus), this service delivery crisis is more than poor governance, it amounts to gross negligence and a direct betrayal of residents who faithfully pay their rates and taxes for services the Metro cannot guarantee.

While the Metro asks residents to “be patient”, they are forced to keep refuse on their properties or transport it to mini-dumping sites themselves. Areas such as Birchleigh North, Terenure, Phomolong, Chloorkop and Norkem Park Extension 4 currently have no refuse removal services at all.

Under the ANC/EFF coalition, even basic routine municipal functions in Ekurhuleni have morphed into full-scale crises.

The Freedom Front Plus will do everything in its power to ensure that the Metro regains direct control over refuse removal and that it is managed responsibly.

The current practice of outsourcing not only leads to squandering millions on contractors, but also places critical control beyond the reach of the Metro.

In the upcoming local government elections, Ekurhuleni residents should punish at the polls those who have clearly demonstrated they are incapable of governing.

Residents deserve a government that genuinely promotes their interests.
