The history of South Africa does not stretch over the ANC’s struggle period alone and a national debate is needed on the retention of symbols which hold particular value for each community, Dr. Corné Mulder, the FF Plus’ spokesperson on Arts and Culture says.
“The country belongs to all who live in it and we have to recognise and respect each other’s histories. The ANC tries to hide its service delivery failures every time shortly before a general election with the sudden changing of the names of streets and towns. Everybody in this country had heroes. Add others to these but do not take mine away,” Dr. Mulder says.
According to Dr. Mulder a balance is obtained regarding this issue on a national level but not at a local level.
He said a national debate about the issue is therefore needed. “Everybody’s heritage in South Africa should be recognised and the ANC cannot have the only claim to South Africa’s history,” Dr. Mulder said.
