It is lamentable that the ANC succeeded in once again gaining control over the Johannesburg Metro earlier today. Geoff Makhubo was elected as the new mayor.
With the support of parties like the IFP, the ANC succeeded in obtaining 137 votes for its candidate. The DA's candidate got 101 votes. It is, thus, very clear that some of the DA councillors voted for the ANC candidate.
The FF Plus supported the DA candidate as part of the 2016 coalition agreement that these two parties entered into. The FF Plus will not be part of the new coalition government and will, thus, fulfil an opposition role in the Metro.
The coalition government of which the FF Plus was part that governed the Metro since 2016 really improved circumstances in the Metro, particularly over the last three years.
Before 2016, Johannesburg deteriorated under ANC rule and residents suffered due to poor service delivery.
It is, therefore, lamentable that internal fights in the DA caused the downfall of the coalition government.
The FF Plus laments the fact, but will from now on fulfil a watchdog function in the council and will keep doing its utmost best to serve the community.
