Illegal sewage dumping threatens pre-school and Kraai River in Aberdeen

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) has written to the Director of Infrastructure at the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality, Mr Bennie Arendse, demanding that the Municipality take urgent action against one of its contractors who is illegally dumping untreated sewage.

The sewage is being dumped in a wetland area connected to the Kraai River, which forms part of the Fish River system. It is also only about 30 metres from a pre-school.

Seeing as this is a municipal contractor, the Municipality is responsible for oversight and compliance with environmental and health regulations.

The illegal practice has been going on for some time, despite repeated complaints from the community.

Exposure to raw sewage poses serious health risks, especially for young children. Possible diseases include diarrhoea, cholera, hepatitis A and skin infections.

The pollution of soil and water sources also creates a long-term risk for the community and areas downstream along the Kraai River.

The Freedom Front Plus demands that the Municipality immediately:

  1. Stop the illegal dumping and avoid further violations.
  2. Hold the contractor accountable, review their contract and take appropriate measures to address the transgressions.
  3. Clean up the area and remove the pollution to limit further health and environmental risks.
  4. Implement emergency measures to protect the pre-school children, teachers and residents living in the vicinity.

It is the Municipality’s duty to fulfil its responsibilities and take decisive action.

The Freedom Front Plus expects the Municipality to present a clear plan with timelines for remedial work and long-term solutions to the community within 14 days.

Sewage spills jeopardising the safety of residents, particularly young children, should not be tolerated.
