The murder of an elderly woman and the serious assault of her husband on a farm near Olifantshoek in the Northern Cape have sent shock waves through the seemingly peaceful province.
The farm is situated about 15km outside the town on the N14 main route.
The FF Plus expresses its deepest condolences to the survivor of the attack, and the couple's family and friends. This murder once again shines the spotlight on the decline of safety in rural areas.
According to the police's spokesperson in the Northern Cape, the woman's tied-up body was discovered in their home this morning. Her husband was able to get away and was found in the field. He is currently receiving medical treatment.
It seems that the attackers were employed by the couple and are most probably foreign citizens.
This attack focuses attention on various matters that are already known: Vulnerable people are targeted for attacks, an easily accessible escape route makes it easier for perpetrators to flee the scene, and one should not be deceived by a seemingly peaceful environment.
The FF Plus will refrain from any further comments until more details are disclosed. Statements based on false information will often do more to stir up emotions rather than prevent similar attacks in the future.
