The FF Plus considers the clumsy management of sewage pumping stations in the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging) as a clear sign of why this municipality, which is under ANC rule, is collapsing.
One example is the West Side Park sewage pumping station whose power supply was cut off by Eskom due to an outstanding bill of just R14 000.
To solve this problem, Emfuleni hired a sanitation vehicle for an exorbitant amount of R200 000 to frequently pump out the sewage, while all it had to do was to pay the small outstanding amount to Eskom.
One cannot help but wonder whether this arrangement was made to solve the sewage problem, or whether it is a smokescreen to award a tender for hiring the sanitation vehicle. The FF Plus will investigate it.
What makes matters even worse is the fact that the sewage meant to be pumped by the West Side Park pumping station is now flowing into the Rietspruit.
So, the pollution of the Vaal River and surrounding streams, as a result of the ANC's mismanagement of Emfuleni, is still continuing despite previous interventions, like the deployment of the Defence Force to help protect and repair pumps.
The public funds squandered in this way come from the Emfuleni Municipality and national fiscus.
Another example of clumsy management is pump station 21 whose pump was stolen quite a while ago.
And although the pump costs only R8 000, no attempts have been made to replace it.
The money spent on hiring the sanitation vehicle to service the West Side Park pumping station would have been more than enough to replace the stolen pump as well.
The sewage meant to be pumped by pump station 21 now joins the steady stream of sewage that ends up in the Rietspruit.
It is clear that the ANC government in the Emfuleni Municipality has no conscience when it comes to its duty to provide good service delivery, as prescribed by the Constitution, and that its focus is instead fixed on awarding and receiving tenders.
