It is ironic that the Ekurhuleni Metro celebrates World Environment Health Day on 25 and 26 September with the theme “Clean Air, Healthy People” while residents are struggling to breathe due to the high levels of air pollution in the Metro.
Instead of clean air and accessible healthcare, residents’ daily lives are severely impacted by pollution and a lack of basic medical care.
The glamorous event is set to take place at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre, where approximately 500 delegates, including the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, and Gauteng’s MEC for Health, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, will debate air quality.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) considers this a farce and proof that government has completely forgotten its people.
The Metro’s ten air quality monitoring stations, located in areas such as Springs and Tembisa, are not functioning properly. Some have been damaged by vandalism, while others are not repaired due to budget reallocations. This means the Metro has no accurate data on the actual state of air quality, while residents’ health keeps deteriorating.
Funds earmarked for repairing air quality monitoring stations have been reallocated, while the tender processes for repairs remain pending. This is a clear sign that the Metro does not prioritise its residents’ health.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), polluted air contributes to respiratory diseases, heart conditions and millions of other illnesses worldwide.
To make matters worse, Ekurhuleni’s more than 90 clinics are in a terrible condition. These clinics are characterised by medical staff shortages, insufficient medicine and defective equipment. Several facilities have leaky roofs and no backup generators for power outages. This hinders the provision of essential healthcare, especially to the indigent who rely on public clinics.
While residents are plagued by issues such as polluted air, dysfunctional clinics and failing basic services, city leaders opt to spend their time and money on symbolism rather than substance.
The Freedom Front Plus will keep the pressure on until the Metro’s priorities align with the daily struggles of ordinary citizens.
