Budget vote debate in Gauteng Legislature: Health – FF Plus challenges politicians to make use of provincial health care services

Provincial health care in Gauteng has deteriorated to such an extent over the last decade that politicians and officials have no answers for those who are dependent on the system.

According to the 2018/19 financial annual report, medical legal claims amounting to R115 million were received and a further R4,9 billion worth of claims is still outstanding.

No definite answer can be provided regarding the electronic information storage facility that was bought in September 2014 for the staggering amount of R500 million. The system was never implemented.

Provincial hospitals are in a terrible state and are deteriorating day by day. All while reports indicate that millions of rand are squandered and misappropriated.

The proposed budget is not sufficient to improve both medical care and infrastructure development in Gauteng's health care system.

In his SOPA, the Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, promised that service providers and contractors will receive payment within 15 days after completion of the work.

He, however, failed to mention how many companies have gone bankrupt due to the provincial government's non-payment. The FF Plus wants to know how this Department is going to pay off its outstanding debt.

Politicians are privileged enough to have medical aids, but the FF Plus challenges the ANC politicians to make use of provincial health care services.

It is very easy to visit hospitals and clinics and to compile reports about it. However, we need to thoroughly investigate the problems and find solutions together. The people of Gauteng deserve the best medical treatment and health care.
