AstraZeneca: Mkhize must explain why South Africa is not yet rid of the vaccine and why the WHO wants to send more doses

The FF Plus insists that the Minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize, must play open cards with the people of South Africa about the 1 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine that the government procured.

He must explain why it has not yet been sold to the African Union (AU) and why Parliament and the people were not informed of the disclaimer in the agreement between South Africa and the Serum Institute of India, which is delaying the process of selling the vaccines to the African Union.

The Minister must disclose the content of the disclaimer and say what South Africa plans to do with the vaccines if they cannot be sold to the AU.

He must also provide clarity on why, according to reports, the Covax programme of the World Health Organisation (WHO) intends to deliver a further 2,4 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to South Africa between now and May 2021.

Particularly while it is known that the vaccine is not effective against the current, local variant of the virus.

At present, there is a lot of confusion regarding the government's handling of the procurement of vaccines and the recent shocking AstraZeneca revelation only adds to the confusion.

The FF Plus has repeatedly stated that the government will not meet the target of 1,1 million vaccinations by the end of March 2021 and that unrealistic targets are being set.

The government's actions make it seem ridiculous in the eyes of the world.

The government must stop living in denial and needs to wake up quickly, otherwise the current trials and procurements may also end in disaster.
