ANC ruined local government in Gauteng

(Debate in Gauteng Legislature on the 2019/20 annual report of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs

During the debate on the annual report of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) for the 2019/20 financial year, the FF Plus accused the Gauteng ANC government of ruining local government in the province.

Service delivery deteriorates year after year because of the ANC's inability to manage the portfolio properly and the preoccupation of the MEC of the Department, Lebogang Maile, with calling members of opposition parties names. As a result, residents have to step in to make service delivery possible.

It appears that service delivery will become more and more privatised under ANC rule. At present, the people are the ones repairing the roads and they are raising funds to approach the court to enforce service delivery or to allow them to repair infrastructure themselves. This trend will only gain momentum as the ANC, despite making many promises to the contrary, pushes ANC-controlled local governments over the edge of ruin.

And in the meantime, Maile appears to only be interested in calling his opponents names while he is frequently raked over the coals by the court for his irrational decisions. Placing the Tshwane Metro Council under administration is a shining example of this.

Even in coalition-controlled councils, like the Tshwane Metro Council, the ANC is undermining service delivery. Thus, the coalition governments will have to clean house in order to ensure proper service delivery in the future.

Local government will only be able to fully recover once the ANC has been ousted from power in every municipality in Gauteng.
