Africa must forget about the past and look to the future

For Africa to move forward, we need to put the past behind us and look to the future. We cannot build a better future for our continent by constantly delving into the past, says dr. Corné Mulder, chief whip of the FF Plus.

Today, during the parliamentary debate on Africa Day, dr. Mulder said that it is in everybody’s interest that the African continent is developed, becomes successful and can compete with the rest of the world.

“There is a lot of talk about the fact that Africa must unite. But maybe we need to focus on our own country first and first make a success of South Africa before we move on to the rest of the continent. If every African country does this, the continent will inevitably be successful.

“It is good to talk about Pan-Africanism, political, social and economic developments and solidarity. It is all good, but we have to start with the basics like economic growth.

“It is painful to watch South Africa go downhill. It is painful to see countries like Egypt and Nigeria outdo us. Let’s first get our own house in order. Let’s first make a success of South Africa, because then we’ll be able set an example and play a role in the success of the African continent.

“Actually, it’s all about leadership and leaders that are willing to stand up for what is right. Leaders that take a stand against corruption and misappropriation and that lead from the front by setting the right example, said dr. Mulder.
