The sewage and blood flowing from the Zeerust sewage plant into the Zeerust dam is creating a serious health risk and is an infringement of the residents’ Constitutional right to a safe environment, says Karlien Venter, FF Plus councillor in the Zeerust municipality.
Yesterday, Venter lodged a complaint about the sewage crises with the Public Protector (PP).
She says that sewage from the Zeerust sewage plant has been flowing into the Zeerust dam for months now. Along with the sewage, there is also blood flowing into the dam.
“It creates a very serious health risk seeing as the community is dependent on these water sources for daily use.
“There are also residents who fish in the dam and then sell their catch in town.
“This has been a problem for months and the municipality has paid no attention to the FF Plus’s complaints and reproofs. A complaint has also been lodged with the Green Scorpions.
“The municipality’s negligence is an infringement on our community’s Constitutional right to an environment that is not harmful to their health and well-being, as stipulated in Section 24 of the Constitution.
“They are also in contravention of water legislation as well as the National Environmental Management Act and we simply will not let them get away with it. The community of Ramotshere Moiloa deserves better,” said Venter.
