The FF Plus is calling on residents and businesses in the Ekurhuleni Metro not to allow private plumbers and contractors to work on faulty power and sewage systems outside of their properties.
The request follows the death of three plumbers on Monday who attempted to unblock a sewage line.
One man reportedly climbed down the manhole whereafter the other two followed. They presumably succumbed to methane gas fumes.
Members of the Metro’s Disaster and Emergency Services Department were quick to arrive at the scene, but the three men had already passed away.
If residents or businesses plan to make use of private contractors for repairing municipal infrastructure outside of their properties, the relevant departments of the Metro must be informed.
Although the FF Plus understands residents’ frustration with the Metro’s slow service delivery, ignorance could claim lives.
The FF Plus expresses its condolences to the deceased men’s next of kin.
