Installation of prepaid electricity meters in Mogale City temporarily suspended

The Mogale City Local Municipality (Krugersdorp, Magaliesburg, Muldersdrift) has temporarily suspended the installation of prepaid electricity meters after the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) pointed out that its current process does not provide for effective credit-control measures.

During the recent section-80 committee meeting for Electricity, Water and Sanitation, the Freedom Front Plus asked what would happen to residents who still owe the Municipality money for previous accounts.

This follows instances where some residents’ electricity supply – which had previously been disconnected due to outstanding accounts – was reconnected after prepaid meters were installed, without the debt being settled.

After the matter was considered by the Accounts Department, the party received official confirmation that the process of installing new meters has been temporarily suspended.

Residents whose old meters have been replaced with prepaid meters are advised to continue purchasing electricity in advance.

Meanwhile, the Freedom Front Plus will engage with the Accounts and Collection Department to reflect on the way forward, while proper solutions for credit control will also be presented to the section-80 committee.

The party also undertakes to keep residents informed of when the meter replacement process will resume and what the new credit control measures entail.
