The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) demands decisive action against members of Ekurhuleni’s metro police (EMPD) who today blocked several major routes due to a wage strike.
EMPD members are currently causing massive disruptions on numerous main routes, including the R21 southbound to OR Tambo Airport.
The members claim dissatisfaction with salary adjustments, restricted overtime, and unfair labour practices.
According to the Labour Relations Act, metro police members are prohibited from participating in strikes and obstructing service delivery.
Government vehicles may only be used for traffic safety and the enforcement of law and order.
The municipal bylaw on metro police clearly states that the EMPD’s role is to protect and secure municipal infrastructure and residents. The opposite is happening here.
The mayoral committee member for community safety, Me. Sizakele Masuku, as well as the mayor of the Ekurhuleni Metro Council, Mr. Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, must take disciplinary action against the members for their actions, which are not in line with their official duties.
Inconveniencing the public without reason is not the way to resolve a wage dispute.
