The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) in the Tshwane Metro officially warned the relevant Department of Health about a possible outbreak of Staphylococcus after around 30 people were treated for it at the Jack Hindon Clinic in Pretoria North.
The Staphylococcus infection is caused by bacteria. The most common symptoms include red, raised bumps, cellulitis (skin infection) and sores with a purulent discharge. Fever may also be present in more serious cases.
A concerned resident contacted the party seeing as the treatment provided by the Clinic was not effective and the infection seems to be spreading rapidly among people. The people affected live on a small holding near Pretoria North.
Tshwane’s Department of Health undertook to immediately inform the Gauteng Health Department, after which a response team will look into the incidents.
Staphylococcus spreads through contact with infected persons. So, people are encouraged to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water, particularly after touching affected areas.
Do not share towels, facecloths or razors. Personal hygiene is of the utmost importance. Wounds should be kept clean and preferably be dressed. Do not pick at wounds or sores.
