The FF Plus is calling on the residents of Ekurhuleni Metro (Boksburg, Alberton, Benoni, Nigel, Springs, Brakpan, Germiston, Edenvale, Kempton Park and surrounding areas) to thoroughly examine the new valuation roll for the period of 2021 – 2025, seeing as some of the property valuations are excessively high.
The FF Plus considers it unacceptable that some valuations were increased with up to 100% amid the country's current unfavourable economic climate.
The Metro Council is being irresponsible towards its residents seeing as this is a difficult time during which many people lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while others suffered cuts to their salaries and food and fuel prices have sky-rocketed.
In one instance, the value of a property in Sunnyridge, Germiston, was adjusted upwards from R831 000 to R3 million, which means that the assessment rates are considerably higher.
The proposed increases came as a shock to many residents as everyone did not receive the relevant notifications.
The FF Plus is not opposed to increases, but these increases must be realistic and should not exploit residents.
The party will ask the Gauteng Legislature to intervene if the Metro proceeds to implement the unacceptably high property valuations.
Residents have time until the 18th of June 2021 at 15:30 to object to their property valuations.
