Disgrace that Cabinet is prepared to launch attacks on bank system on behalf of Guptas

It is scandalous that the Gupta family has so much influence on government, and particularly Cabinet, to move them to attack the whole economic monetary and payment system on behalf of the Guptas, and in so doing, placing the integrity of the economy under more pressure, Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus’ parliamentary spokesperson on Finance, said.

This follows on proposals of the Cabinet and inter-ministerial committee regarding a judicial commission of inquiry on the banks’ treatment of the Guptas.

Adv. Alberts says it is amazing that Cabinet would cause so much damage to the South African economy for the sake of one family.

“It is a fact that the economy is currently under threat due to the struggle between Minister Pravin Gordhan and Treasury on the one side and President Jacob Zuma and the Hawks on the other side.

“To now also intervene for the Guptas and attack the whole banking system, shows that the Zuma faction is busy waging a desperate war where no price is too high today, just to stay in control of the state purse.

“The ANC under Zuma is only interested in eating and not in building. This they are doing on the account of taxpayers, and it is clear that they will defend that privilege, regardless of the costs to the country as a whole.

“The proposals for an investigation into the issuing of bank licenses would not have been so nonsensical had it not been done at the behest of one family, but as part of an unbiased and fair investigation into the competitiveness of the banking sector in the country and the artificial exclusion of new banks from the economy.

“These investigations are, however, now contaminated, and will ironically see to it that the current group of banks will remain dominant.

“The damage and consequences of the Zuma elephant which tramples everything underfoot is huge and spread further every day,” Adv. Alberts said.
