Needless restriction placed on vehicle testing stations in Kimberley – backlogs increasing

The Northern Cape MEC for Transport and Safety, Ms Nontobeko Vilakazi, is creating a needless crisis with motor vehicle registrations as she has placed a restriction of just 18 vehicles per day on testing stations. This means that there is currently a waiting period of 30 or more days before a roadworthy certificate can be issued.

As a result, the sustainability of not only testing stations is in jeopardy, but also that of vehicle dealers, financing institutions and clients who are classified as essential service providers. Without a roadworthy certificate, a motor vehicle cannot be financed, delivered or ensured.

Gauteng is the only other province that has also placed a restriction on the number of tests that vehicle testing stations may perform with a limit of 24 per day.

The FF Plus is calling on the MEC to repeal this draconian restriction. It makes no sense to implement such restrictions in the province with the lowest Covid-19 infection rate.
