The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) gave its full support for the motion of no confidence in the current leadership of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM).
The GOOD party councillor, Lawrence Troon, tabled the motion and the Freedom Front Plus seconded it.
It is a motion of no confidence in the Mayor, Babalwa Lobishe, the Deputy Mayor, Gary Van Niekerk, Speaker, Eugene Johnson, and the Chief Whip of the Council, Wandisile Jikeka.
The Freedom Front Plus offered compelling reasons for supporting the motion.
The Metro is performing poorly under the current leadership with just 29,9% of the NMBM’s budget spent by the middle of the financial year. This has a detrimental impact on infrastructure projects and job-creation opportunities, especially in poorer communities.
The Mayor also failed to table the Metro’s adjustment budget to the Council in time. She ignores her political responsibility in favour of attempts at controlling the Metro’s administration.
More and more allegations are surfacing of supposed maladministration, abuse of power, lack of accountability, neglecting small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs), and squandering of public funds.
NMBM residents deserve better than the current leadership, which has breached the trust of the council and the community.
It is time for a new and accountable, competent leadership to step up and restore service delivery, financial discipline and good governance.
The Freedom Front Plus is irrevocably committed to sound governance, and an accountable municipal government that puts residents and their interests first.
