SABC increasingly abandoning its role as impartial public broadcaster

The FF Plus finds the events at the SABC, where personnel are being prosecuted due to their opposition to censorship regrettable and views the situation as so serious that the it will be asking the parliamentary portfolio committee on communications to intervene, Dr. Pieter Mulder, FF Plus leader said.

The resignation of Jimi Matthews, acting group CEO of the SABC, confirms that there is an unsavoury situation at the SABC, where some personnel members are of the opinion that they have been placed under censorship and cannot, therefore, properly fulfil their primary function as public broadcaster.

“It appears as if the SABC is now blatantly moving from public broadcaster to government broadcaster. The question must be asked why the license fees of opposition voters can be used to finance a broadcaster which is increasingly becoming the mouthpiece of the governing party.

“The task of a news service is to portray the reality and not a censored reality thereof. In this way they are creating a false world which is out of touch with the reality of what is happening in South Africa.

“History has proven that when a news service has lost its credibility once, it is very difficult to repair it. That is what is happening at the SABC at present,” Dr. Mulder says.
