The FF Plus has requested the Gauteng Police Commissioner, Elias Mawela, to provide a proper safe to the Randfontein police station to ensure that the more than 800 firearms on the premises are securely stored.
At present, these weapons are stored in an office with a security gate.
The weapons range from handguns, automatic rifles, hunting rifles and self-made guns that were turned over to the police station.
The station also does not have a fire extinguisher in case of a fire.
These irregularities were discovered during an oversight visit by the Gauteng Legislature's Community Safety Committee.
Storing weapons in an office is extremely reckless and increases the risk of weapon theft.
The Police Commissioner must act immediately to either move the weapons or provide the police station with a proper safe.
If any weapons used to commit a crime are lost, it could have a seriously detrimental impact on the outcome of the relevant court case.
