Metsimaholo: Council’s negligence leads to loss of R27,1 million

The Metsimaholo Municipality (Sasolburg, Deneysville, Oranjeville) has lost R27,1 million in conditional allocations for municipal and water infrastructure because it failed to spend the earmarked funds even though the Municipality's infrastructure is falling apart.

The council's failure to appoint a municipal manager and a chief financial officer in the last six months was the reason that the National Treasury put forward for not granting the Municipality's request to transfer the unspent funds to the new financial year.

The Municipality has already been placed under Section-139 administration by the provincial government. The forfeited funds serve as further proof that the ANC is unable to govern responsibly.

The Municipality's unlawful conduct and underspending slashes the municipal water and infrastructure allocations with R27,1 million while the money should have been used for essential infrastructure upgrading and maintenance.

It is unacceptable that the conditional allocations of the previous financial year were not spent and it points to the ANC's misguided priorities.

Metsimaholo's existing infrastructure is collapsing and it can under no circumstances afford to lose any more funds.
