Louis Trichardt house fire: Fire-fighting services decline under ANC governance

The blame for a fire that destroyed a family home in Flamboyant Street in Louis Trichardt on Tuesday evening can be placed squarely on the shoulders of the incompetent ANC-controlled Makhado Local Municipality and the Vhembe District Municipality.

Local residents who do water deliveries in town and members of the community had to step in and put out the fire.

The junior firefighters who had been deployed to the scene with a bakkie and a fire engine did not know how to use the equipment.

The local FF Plus councillor, Werner Esterhuizen, was on the scene and stepped in to get the fire-fighting equipment working.

The Makhado Local Municipality has been plagued by water shortages for months and many fire hydrants have been vandalised.

Neighbours with boreholes supplied water to the bosvark fire engine, and other residents used their own fire-fighting equipment and even buckets of water to try and put out the flames.

The bosvark fire engine is not equipped to put out large fires and the house was destroyed.

According to the Vhembe fire brigade's department head, Jack Ramalatso, the two junior firefighters were sent to the scene because senior officials were already deployed to another scene.

In March 2023, the FF Plus lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) against the Vhembe District Municipality about the ongoing water crisis, which it failed to address.

In the same month, the party also lodged a criminal complaint against the Executive Mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Nenguda Dowelani, and the acting municipal manager, Mr NC Tshikovha, relating to the same issue.

Due to both municipalities' negligence, residents themselves are now responsible for putting out fires, which could endanger their lives.

Municipalities are under a legal obligation to provide fire-fighting services to residents. But the ANC-controlled councils are unable to do so.

The FF Plus wants to thank all the residents and businesses that stepped in to try and extinguish the fire.
