Financial pressure warrants a review of certain allocations in Limpopo.
This is evident from the budget that the Limpopo MEC for Finance, Seaparo Sekoati, tabled for the 2023/2024 financial year.
There is no justification for earmarking R5 million for the furnishing of traditional leaders' offices or the R55 million for buying new cars for these leaders.
That R5 million is more than what is budgeted to procure ambulances for the province.
The Department of Education is allocated 48,2% of the entire budget and receives R38,188 billion for the financial year. The money will only make a difference to children's education if it is used correctly, though.
Textbooks are almost never delivered to schools on time.
The Health Department receives 30% of the budget, which amounts to R23,772 billion. This Department, however, failed to keep its medicine cabinets stocked and provide proper healthcare services with its previous allocation.
It is not so much a lack of funds as the misappropriation of those funds.
The FF Plus will keep a close eye on the Department to try and prevent any more squandering of funds.
Transport and Community Safety receive R2,484 billion, which will hopefully be used to repair Limpopo's crumbling roads.
Tax money should be used to make the people of Limpopo's lives better. Thus far, the provincial government has failed to do so.
