The ANC government that is so quick to distort South Africa’s history in order to stir up emotions regarding the issue of land, would do well to take note of the hard reality of farm attacks and murders and take decisive action to put a stop to it.
According to statistics of the Transvaal Agricultural Union (TAU), there have been 42 attacks and six murders on farms this year. Two elderly people were viciously killed just this past weekend.
On Monday, the 72-year-old Ms Hentie van der Vyfer was presumably overpowered and strangled in her home on a farm near Ermelo in Mpumalanga.
Last night (Tuesday), the 68-year-old Mr Hannes Christie from Coligny in the North West was hacked to death with a sharp object, presumably an axe.
Last year there were 423 farm attacks in South Africa in which 82 people were murdered. Several people were injured and raped in the attacks. It can be assumed that after the attacks, many of the farm workers were left unemployed.
Concerning last year’s figures, 423 attacks a year come down to 35,25 attacks per month. That is more than one attack every single day of the year. Someone was murdered on a farm every 4,3 days last year.
Twenty years ago, there were more or less 70 000 commercial farmers in South Africa. At present, there are about 30 000 left.
Now that President Cyril Ramaphosa is at the helm, the FF Plus will once again put renewed pressure on the government to declare farm attacks a priority crime and actively devise plans to put a stop to it.
If nothing is done about it, it will serve as proof that President Ramaphosa made empty promises and that he is not really serious about combating crime.
