FF Plus requests intervention in Free State power crisis

The Tokologo Local Municipality (Boshof, Dealesville and Hertzogville) has failed to honour its payment agreement with Eskom and now residents that pay their accounts are being punished for the Municipality’s poor financial management. On top of that, Eskom is also threatening to take more aggressive action with power cuts, which would mean load shedding of up to 14 hours for residents that diligently pay their municipal accounts.

The FF Plus has requested that the Free State MEC for Finance, Ms Elsabé Rockman, must urgently intervene in the power crisis experienced by residents of the Tokologo Municipality due to the fact that the Municipality has not honoured its payment agreement with Eskom.

At present, Tokologo owes the electricity supplier R36 million.

Effective municipalities are the heartbeat of our province and if they fail, the entire Free State fails.
In the past, Rockman was involved in the negotiations between Eskom and Free State municipalities where payment agreements were entered into.

The paying consumers are the ones that are mostly affected by Eskom’s power cuts seeing as the residents of the other areas, like Malebogo outside Boshoff, buy their electricity directly from Eskom.

In the meantime, the Masilonyana Local Municipality (Brandfort, Theunissen and Winburg) is facing similar cuts in its power supply as its debt currently amounts to R48 million.

The FF Plus also asked Rockman to make provision in the 2018/2019 budget that she will table on 7 March to support the municipalities that are in arrears so that they can implement sustainable measures that will shield paying residents from further detriment.

In his State of the Province Address, the Free State premier made promises on behalf of the Free State government with regard to economic transformation. These promises, however, are no more than castles built in the sky as numerous municipalities in the province cannot even fulfil basic financial functions.
