Officials and councillors of the Emfuleni Local Municipality are facing a miserable Christmas because the Municipality failed to pay its power and water bills.
The Municipality was taken to court twice in just a few days for an attachment order on its primary bank account.
Emfuleni serves Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging.
Rand Water's attachment order was granted on Monday for the Municipality's outstanding debt of R1,1 billion.
On top of that, Eskom was granted a court order last week to freeze Emfuleni's bank account due to outstanding debt amounting to R1,3 billion.
This is just the beginning of Emfuleni's problems, because other creditors will most probably follow suit after Rand Water and Eskom.
In addition to Emfuleni being unable to pay salaries, no payments can be made to debtors either.
For residents, these seizures mean that poor service delivery will now come to a complete standstill.
Residents and loyal taxpayers are being punished for the ANC's maladministration and failure to govern Emfuleni effectively.
Emfuleni deserves better than the ANC.
