Court ruling over nuclear power shows there was a snake in the grass with the agreement

The Western Cape High Court finding that almost all processes of the government's nuclear power agreement with Russia and other countries was illegal and unconstitutional, shows conclusively that the process in all probability was fraught with irregularities, says Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus' parliamentary spokesman on energy.

Adv. Alberts says the FF Plus welcomes the finding, as well as the court's order that government must pay the parties' legal costs, even if it means that the taxpayer is actually footing the bill for yet another attempt of the ANC government to plunder the treasury.

According to Adv. Alberts the environmental group Earthlife Africa and the South African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (Safcei) must be applauded for the court battle they fought for the past two years.

"The FF Plus always said there is no need for dirty power plants in South Africa, and we are therefore delighted about the ruling.

"Enough power for the country can be generated by a combination of existing power sources and renewable sources such as solar and wind, which is a rapidly growing industry.

"It is fast becoming cheaper and faster to generate renewable power, and we owe it to nature and our children's future to do it this way.

"The whole process was clearly driven by the ANC simply to fill their own pockets. Eskom for example already has surplus power. Why then a nuclear plant which will push South Africa into a bottomless pit of debt only to enrich a few people? "asks Adv. Alberts.
