Arrest of officials after allegations of corruption in Mpumalanga underlines need for lifestyle audits

The FF Plus welcomes last week's arrest of two high-ranking public officials from Mpumalanga on allegations of fraud, but it once again shines the spotlight on the need for conducting lifestyle audits on all officials and political office-bearers.

The head of Mpumalanga's Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Samkelo Ngubane, was arrested on allegations of corruption with the procurement of personal protective equipment amounting to R5,9 million.

Ngubane joins his co-accused and Deputy Director of the same Department, Raymond Manzini, his brother, Chris Manzini, and a director of Zalabantu Estate Trust, Moses Ndlovu.

If the Premier of Mpumalanga, Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane, had kept her promise to conduct lifestyle audits on all officials and politicians, the alleged corruption could have been prevented.

Lifestyle audits will not only expose unaccountable wealth, but can also be used as a tool to effectively uncover and eradicate corrupt activities.

Clearly, putting an end to the looting of state coffers and corruption is not a priority for the ANC.

The people of Mpumalanga deserve better than the incompetent ANC.
