Afrikaans: FF Plus challenges Maimane to public leaders’ debate

The leader of the FF Plus, Dr Pieter Groenewald, challenges the leader of the DA, Mr Mmusi Maimane, to a public leaders' debate on language rights and the protection thereof, and in particular preserving Afrikaans.

In a Facebook video, the DA leader alleges that his party fights for multilingualism and protects the rights of Afrikaans-speaking people.

The FF Plus is of the view that the DA is misleading Afrikaans voters by making dishonest and populist statements and promises. Among other things, Maimane conveniently forgot to mention that in the Moqhaka council, the DA protested against the use of Afrikaans.

He also failed to say that in Parliament, the DA voted in favour of a report by the Portfolio Committee for Higher Education with clear recommendations for the North West University, including, among other things, that the institution should use only English as medium of instruction.

The FF Plus will demand answers from the DA where the party takes direct action against Afrikaans.

The FF Plus truly is committed to the protection of all eleven official languages in South Africa. Over the last 25 years, the party has also shown that it is committed to the promotion of multilingualism and mother-tongue education.

The time has come for voters to be informed, in an open and honest manner, about which parties really are fighting for specific language communities.

Afrikaans voters are looking for a political party that puts the protection of Afrikaans right at the top of its agenda. For years, the FF Plus has been fighting back against the political and institutional pressure put on Afrikaans and the oppression of all eleven official languages.
