Earlier this week, the Demarcation Board turned down the application by the community of Three Rivers in Vereeniging to be integrated into the Midvaal Local Municipality.
The residents of the affluent neighbourhoods of Three Rivers, Three Rivers East and Kliplatdrift requested the Demarcation Board two years ago to adjust the municipal boundaries so that the areas no longer fall under the Emfuleni Local Municipality, but Midvaal.
Residents are dissatisfied with Emfuleni’s service delivery, seeing as these communities bring in between R40 million and R41 million in property taxes for the Municipality.
The communities’ application to be moved from the dilapidated Emfuleni to Midvaal underlines the FF Plus’s argument that municipalities should be made smaller to bring local government closer to the people.
It will afford them the opportunity to have insight into how their hard-earned tax money is spent to benefit the communities serviced by that specific municipality.
The FF Plus had voiced its objection even before the Demarcation Board decided to integrate Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging to form the Emfuleni Local Municipality.
The party’s warning that it will cause service delivery to deteriorate rather than improve fell on deaf ears.
The truth of the matter is that communities are trying to leave Emfuleni with all might and main because of its dire financial position which makes service delivery nearly impossible.
Residents’ only solution is to oust the ANC from power in Gauteng with the upcoming elections and replace it with a coalition government that has their best interests at heart.
The FF Plus will form an integral part of such a coalition government.
