Even though the upcoming elections are probably the most significant in 30 years, several political parties in the Lekwa Local Municipality (Standerton, Morgenzon) have let residents down by failing to attend an important council meeting.
The absence of the ANC, EFF and DA meant that the budget for the 2024/25 financial year could not be adopted because a quorum could not be reached.
One of the excuses offered is that councillors are wrapped up in election campaigns.
It is unacceptable as there were also several compliance regulations on this morning’s agenda. Such conduct disrupts the Council’s functioning through these meetings and comes down to nothing but political sabotage.
The budget has to be adopted before 31 May. As a result, a special council meeting will have to be convened, and if the budget is not adopted in that meeting, the Council runs the risk of being placed under administration.
The Municipality is already under national intervention.
The FF Plus is calling on all councillors to take their jobs as public office-bearers and public servants seriously.
If the aforementioned parties’ councillors continue with their contemptuous conduct, the FF Plus will lodge a complaint with the Speaker, Mr Sipho Majozi, so appropriate action can be taken against the relevant councillors.
