FF Plus to report Lesufi for disrespecting the Constitution

The FF Plus will  report the MEC for Education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, to the Integrity Commissioner of the Gauteng Legislature.

This follows Lesufi’s announcement of the 2019 registration system for grades one and eight on Thursday.

His briefing raised more than a few eyebrows as Lesufi made it very clear that Gauteng schools’ language policies as not to play a role in parents’ selection of a school and the application process.

According to Lesufi, parents must apply to the school closest to their jobs or homes, regardless of the school’s language policy.

The FF Plus regards Lesufi's anouncement as paving the way for violence at schools and that he is busy driving mother-tongue education out of schools.

"It will result in total chaos and it is the children that will be caught in the middle of public violence. Lesufi is busy using innocent children as a political playball and he must be stopped. By doing this, he is not only attacking Afrikaans, but also every other official language in South Africa," says Philip van Staden, FF Plus MPL in he Gauteng Legislature.

Lesufi will be reported in terms of Section 135 of the Constitution in conjunction with Schedule 2 Section 5. According to this Section 135, before members of the Executive Council of a province (that is, every premier and MEC who serves as a member of the Legislature) begin to perform their functions, they must swear or affirm faithfulness to the Republic and obedience to the Constitution, in accordance with Schedule 2.

According to the FF Plus, Lesufi transgressed this section of the Constitution by disrespecting Section 29, which clearly states that everyone has the right to receive education in the official language or languages of their choice in public educational institutions where that education is reasonably practicable. Furthermore, Lesufi also broke the Code of Conduct for Gauteng Legislature officials.

"The FF Plus wants to send the message loud and clear: Lesufi’s days are numbered and the time has come for him to be called to account," Van Staden says.
