In the light of the conflict at universities which according to the FF Plus has the potential to escalate and spill over into all spheres of our society, the FF Plus has asked parliament today to urgently debate the issue in the public interest, Dr. Pieter Mulder, leader of the FF Plus said.
Dr. Mulder says that if there is no intervention at the highest level, it could lead to a further deterioration of race relations and the country’s economy.
In a letter to the Speaker of parliament, Baleka Mbete, Dr. Mulder said the issue is extremely urgent and that it should be placed on the order paper immediately.
The letter furthermore states that the increasing racial tension and conflict in South Africa and in particular at university campuses lead to great instability which is detrimental to economic growth, education and service delivery and parliament must discuss it to seek solutions.
“Whereas we are currently trying to restore confidence in the economy in an attempt to entice foreign investors, the images of burning university buildings and fighting students are very bad for South Africa’s image internationally.
“Parliament and all political parties now have this opportunity to give leadership through such a debate,” Dr. Mulder said.
