Is Dr. Mamphele Ramphele still opposed to affirmative action and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) or will she do a U-turn and seamlessly fall in with the DA’s policy about this?Adv. Anton Alberts, the Freedom Front Plus’ parliamentary spokesperson on Labour, says Dr. Ramphele owes an explanation to everybody who supported Agang precisely because of her policy views on this.
On Agang’s website Ramphele clearly stated that BEE is a failure and that transformation only enriches a small group of political elites.
“The question should now be asked whether Ramphele, as the presidential candidate of the DA, will have any influence in that party’s policy about these issues or whether she will mindlessly embrace it.
“It is also interesting that she had accepted the position as the presidential candidate of the DA after she had earlier strongly expressed her opposition to parties who could place candidates on their candidates’ lists without the say of voters.
“Regarding this she said to the media last year ‘…the system which entails that parliamentary members are elected with lists which are compiled by political parties, gives disproportionate powers to the parties at the cost of ordinary citizens…’.
“It is clear that Ramphele is prepared to betray her loyal supporters for a well-sounding title at the DA.
“Until the weekend she had still kept them in the dark by maintaining that there was no question about a merge with another party. She will have to account for these statements as well,” Adv. Alberts said.
