The Farlam Commission’s recommendations that president Jacob Zuma should take action to investigate the fitness of the national commissioner of Police, gen. Riah Phiyega necessitates Phiyega resigning immediately, Dr. Pieter Groenewald, the FF Plus’ chief spokesperson on the Police said.
Dr. Groenewald said the Commission in essence found that Phiyega is not fit for the position and president Zuma is co-responsible for this as the National Commissioner is appointed by the President in terms of Section 207(1) of the Constitution.
“The Freedom Front Plus had objected each time when a national commissioner of Police had been appointed that did not come from the Police corps itself. That is why Phiyega should resign and Zuma must appoint an experienced and expert member of the Police.
“All the recommendations of the Farlam Commission are welcomed and it is clear that there are serious defects in the training of the Police, especially with regards to crowd control, but in particular also in the top management of the Police.
“The time has come to scrap political appointments in the Police where skills and expertise are needed,” Dr. Groenewald said.
