The comments of Marius Fransman that Robert McBride is a hero, a patriot and dedicated public servant, is a preview of what voters and residents of this province can expect under an ANC controlled Western Cape government after 2014, Dr. Corné Mulder, a member of parliament and leader of the Freedom Front Plus in the Western Cape says.
All indications are that Fransman will be the ANC’s candidate for the position of premier in the 2014 election in the Western Cape.
McBride became notorious for his part in the Magoo’s Bar bomb in Durban in June 1986 in which three women were killed and 69 people were injured. He claimed at the time that the attack was done on the instructions of the ANC.
He was condemned to death but received amnesty during the TRC process.
While working as a senior official in the Department of Foreign Affairs, he was arrested in Mozambique for alleged gun-trafficking. He alleged that he was cooperating with the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
Following an accident in December 2006 in which he crashed and overturned his official vehicle on the R511, McBride was found guilty of drunk driving and defeating the ends of justice. He was the chief of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police at the time. He was freed following his appeal.
“That is why it is essential that the ANC should be kept out of the Western Cape government. The FF Plus has already committed itself to this with the forthcoming 2014 elections. We will continue, together with other parties, to keep the ANC out of the Western Cape government,” Dr. Mulder says.
