Eskom’s abuse of the consumer cannot be tolerated any longer and the FF Plus will oppose the planned 22% increase in electricity prices in any way possible, Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus’ parliamentary spokesperson on Energy said.
The FF Plus is amongst others, planning protest action at Eskom’s head office Megawatt Park in Sunninghill and will insist that information on which companies are providing Eskom with diesel and at what prices is released.
According to Adv. Alberts it is a given that the increase will mostly be used for the purchase of diesel which has to keep the country’s power turbines operating and questions are widely being asked as to who is benefitting from these diesel contracts.
“The FF Plus is totally opposed to the increase and thoroughly realises that it will be used to purchase diesel at inflated rates from cadres who want to use the crisis to further milk the fast shrinking treasury and taxpayers for millions of rand.
“The FF Plus will be asking Eskom by way of questions in parliament to reveal who is providing it with diesel and will also use the Promotion and Access to Information Act to obtain this information.
“The companies tribunal will also be asked to investigate the directors of Eskom to determine whether there had been a breach of their confidentiality obligations toward Eskom with regard to their compensation.
“With our protest action at Megawatt Park, the FF Plus will also be demanding that Eskom and its directors pay back their exorbitant and undeserved bonuses.
“As was the case with the recent tax increases, this electricity increase is a slap in the face of the public which is being forced in this manner to pay for the clumsiness and abuses of the state and its institutions,” Adv. Alberts said.
